Image: Those Who Fell Through the Cracks
Kadir van Lohuizen

In this selection of photographs, Kadir van Lohuizen captures the life and landscape of New Orleans in the two years following the storm. In the first four images, photographs taken immediately after Katrina are contrasted with photographs of the same locales taken two years later. The empty landscapes that remain attest to the slow pace of rebuilding efforts in many neighborhoods. High levels of violence and the challenges of displacement are compromising some residents' efforts to maintain a sense of security after the storm, as illustrated in the next set of images. In spite of the difficult circumstances New Orleanians still face, the final group of images show that cultural traditions have persisted as a way to affirm a connection with one's community.
