Date:
March 1, 2002

Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, public opinion about and government attitudes toward established civil rights and responsibilities have shifted sharply, threatening to erode hard-fought civil liberties gains.

In a recent interview with Philanthropy News Digest, OSI Vice President and Director of U.S. Programs Gara LaMarche spoke about his distinguished career as a civil liberties advocate and what the post-9/11 environment might mean for the future. Among the topics he covers are racial profiling, antiterrorism policies proposed and implemented by Attorney General John Ashcroft, global security, and President Bush's "axis of evil" speech.
