Bio

Amel Gorani

Africa Program Officer
International Women's Program

Amel Gorani joined the International Women’s Program as the program officer for Africa in January 2008. A graduate of Uppsala University with an MA in political science, Gorani has worked extensively within the development field and on human rights and women's rights issues in Africa and Europe. She served a senior advisor on marginalized and vulnerable groups for the USAID Sudan Mission, and prior to that, worked for the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) in Kenya as the program officer for Somalia and Sudan. Gorani has also worked as a consultant for various organizations including the Initiative for Inclusive Security, the Strategic Initiative for Women in the Horn of Africa (SIHA), and the Swedish Integration Board. She served as executive director of Sudan Future Care—a Sudanese NGO working in the war-affected areas in the eastern Sudan. Originally from Sudan, Gorani lived in Sweden for many years and has been based in Eritrea, Kenya, and Sudan. She is fluent in Arabic, English, and Swedish, and has a fair knowledge of French.
