Restoring American Leadership

Washington, DC—The Open Society Institute and the Security and Peace Institute today released a report outlining strategies to achieve national security goals through strengthening global alliances. The report, Restoring American Leadership: 13 Cooperative Steps to Advance Global Progress is a collection of essays written by experts in their fields. Each essay provides a specific set of recommendations for executive action and a brief overview of the Administration’s position on the issue to date.

“The United States faces a daunting array of international crises and simmering transnational problems, none of which can be addressed by the U.S. alone,” said Morton H. Halperin, Co-Chair of the Restoring American Leadership project. “We must engage our allies, new and traditional, and work with international institutions in order to ensure that U.S. efforts lead to stability, security, prosperity and health of all Americans.”

Restoring American Leadership touches on a wide range of topics from international cooperation in the war on terror to curbing proliferation of nuclear weapons to advancing the rights of women across the globe. “This book offers fresh ideas for addressing intractable problems," said Richard Leone, Co-Chair of the Restoring American Leadership project. “Progress on each of these issues is in the nation’s best interest, and resolving any of them will require strengthened international cooperation.”

Restoring American Leadership aims to make a constructive contribution to the ongoing debate about how America can best assert responsible leadership in a new era.
