D.C. Community Grants Initiative

Grantee List

Grantees
Centro Nia
2008

Centro Nía's mission is to educate children and youth and strengthen families in a multicultural, bilingual environment.  Founded in 1986, the organization is a cornerstone of the Columbia Heights community.

Centro Nía was initially established as an early childhood education provider by a group of mothers seeking to create quality and accessible child care for the children of other low-income families.  As the children grew older and other family support needs became evident, the organization expanded to fill these needs.

Centro Nía now provides comprehensive educational and family support services to more than 2,000 low-income Latino, African-American, and multi-ethnic children and family members at 3 sites in Washington, DC and Montgomery County, MD.

In 2008, the DC Community Grants Initiative awarded Centro Nía with a project support grant to help build a family mental health component into its Family Institute program. The Family Institute provides family counseling and social services to about 600 individuals each year; through this project, Centro Nía seeks to strengthen parent and community access to mental health services.
