Mentors of Minorities in Education
2008

Mentors of Minorities in Education (M.O.M.I.Es) was created in response to the unmet need for high-quality educational services for low-income children.  M.O.M.I.Es targets at-risk children of color in the early primary and school-age years to provide long-term, holistic support at a critical phase of development.

M.O.M.I.Es engages children, parents and caregivers in a unique, interactive cultural learning curriculum that has been developed to build life skills, strengthen core academic skills, and develop leadership and confidence in participants.

M.O.M.I.Es' core programs include: The After School Program, which provides 25-30 low-income children in two program sites with care that integrates exercises aimed at building life skills, academic tutoring, creative arts, and cultural-based learning techniques; the Safe Haven Summer Camp, which supports low-income families by providing day-long summer camp programming for up to seven weeks at two program sites; and the Children's Gallery of Black History, a year-round program that offers interactive, hands-on learning exhibitions that share the stories of great people of color.

In 2008, the DC Community Grants Initiative awarded M.O.M.I.Es with a general support grant.
