D.C. Community Grants Initiative

Grantee List

In 2006, the Open Society Institute launched the DC Community Grants Initiative to address needs in the District of Columbia and Prince George’s County. The initiative focuses on two areas:

  • Youth Leadership and Development: organizations that build leadership skills, foster civic engagement and/or promote development among diverse young people.
  • Needs of Low-income Families: organizations that provide direct services, engage in advocacy, and offer solutions to the unique problems faced by low and no-income families.

The DC Community Grants Initiative annually awards one-year grants of up to $40,000 to community-based organizations that engage in youth leadership and development and/or provide services for low-income families.

The initiative does not accept unsolicited proposals.

2008 Grantees

Centro Nia
Centro Nía received a project support grant to help build a family mental health component into its Family Institute program.  more

DC Urban Debate League
DCUDL was awarded a general support grant to help it expand its programs in DC as well as into Prince George's county.  more

Mentoring ToDAY
Mentoring ToDAY, which provides mentoring, advocacy, and family engagement services to youth incarcerated at Oak Hill Youth Center, recieved a general support grant.  more

Mentors of Minorities in Education
Mentors of Minorities in Education, which provides high-quality educational services for low-income children, received a general support grant.  more
