Special Initiatives
In addition to its long and short term programs, U.S. Programs has embarked on two special initiatives to address the Global Warming and Subprime Lending crises, both of which are increasingly dire. These two emergencies are so dangerous to the American democratic ideals that OSI strives to embody, that U.S. Programs is committing resources to address these urgent threats. These initiatives include discrete grantmaking by invitation only.
Global Warming
U.S. Programs has been monitoring developments in the U.S. and abroad related to global warming since mid 2005. Broadly speaking, our interests lie in three areas:
- building the public and political will to adopt and implement effective and comprehensive national climate policies in the U.S.;
- restoring American leadership in international efforts to solve the climate crisis;
- identifying opportunities to assist with the development of an international policy framework to succeed the Kyoto Protocol when it expires in 2012.
Neighborhood Stabilization
OSI's Neighborhood Stabilization Initiative supports effective and timely responses to the subprime lending crisis and its impact on low and moderate income communities and communities of color. The initiative supports a range of organizing and community outreach, legal services, litigation, research, and policy advocacy focused on foreclosure prevention and systemic reform within the courts and the mortgage lending industry. It builds upon OSI's strong record of addressing the most profound threats to the full functioning of democracy in the United States.
