Liane Rozzell
2009

Legal Aid Justice Center

Virginia's juvenile justice system relies heavily on incarceration. Many children are placed in the adult system, and children of color are disproportionately represented among those incarcerated.

Liane Rozzell will build an organization of families, youth and community allies to reform Virginia's juvenile justice system.  Her project will support, inform, empower, and mobilize families of youth involved with the system, enabling them to be more effective advocates for their own children and for juvenile justice reform at the state and local level.

Rozzell is the founder and executive director of Families & Allies of Virginia's Youth.  She began organizing family members of youth in the juvenile justice system while her son was incarcerated in one of Virginia's youth prisons.  Rozzell was a video producer, director, writer and editor for more than 20 years.  Her video editing credits include documentaries and programs for museums.  Early in her career, she was a magazine editor.  Rozzell received a BA from Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges and is a graduate of the Political Leaders Program at the University of Virginia's Sorensen Institute.
