Justice Strategies

A grant to launch the Grassroots Civic Participation and Action Research Project, to increase the civic participation of people affected by punitive criminal justice issues. The project will provide research to directly affected communities to inform and engage them in policymaking process.

Rooks has long worked to raise awareness of the current and historical relevance of community organizing in social movements. He has served as a consultant to organizations including the ACLU of Northern California and the Drug Policy Alliance. He has also been a national field organizer for the ACLU of Santa Cruz, CA, and the executive director of A Better Way Foundation in New Haven, CT. Rooks served as an adjunct professor teaching social movement theory at the University of Connecticut School of Social Work and St. Josephs College, and also taught research methods at Central Connecticut State University. He earned a Master of Social Work degree from the University of Connecticut and a BS from Prairie View A&M University.
