A grant to write a series of articles examining the workings of the nation's Sexually Violent Predator laws, with a focus on New Jersey. The project will explore how state authorities designate a person as a "sexually violent predator," and examine the ethical and constitutional problems presented by this collaboration of criminal justice and psychiatry.

Mansnerus is a journalist and lawyer. She has spent more than 20 years as a reporter and editor at the New York Times, covering legal affairs and, most recently, government and politics in New Jersey. Earlier, she worked for the Detroit Free Press and the Philadelphia Inquirer. As a lawyer, Mansnerus served as a clerk to the Hon. Dolores K. Sloviter of the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit and as a staff attorney for the Environmental Protection Agency. She received a bachelor's degree from the University of Michigan, a master's from the Columbia University School of Journalism, and a law degree from New York University.
