Steve Liss
2004 In juvenile detention facilities throughout the United States, young offenders aged 10-16, many with mental illness and drug dependencies, are locked up, sometimes for weeks or months, waiting for trial or placement. Mr. Liss’ project will examine the role of juvenile detention and its impact on children in the United States. The final result will be a collection of still photographs documenting the experience of children incarcerated in that system. The photographs will be accompanied by broadcast quality audio recordings of children, families and staff members talking about their lives and experiences, enabling the project to be a highly effective multi-media presentation as well exhibited in galleries and published in books and magazines. His main objective is to raise public awareness and challenge us to engage in a national dialogue that is framed around rehabilitating children rather than incarcerating them. Oak Park, IL | |
