2007 Texas Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty A grant to to raise public awareness in Texas about the application of the death penalty to the severely mentally ill. The project will build coalitions between criminal justice reform and mental health advocates, develop resource guides for grassroots activists, and promote death-penalty alternatives for people with severe mental illness. Houlé served as a program associate for Amnesty International USA's (AIUSA) Program to Abolish the Death Penalty in Washington, DC, from 2002 to 2007. In this capacity, she supervised a network of 50 volunteer leaders nationwide and coordinated all aspects of AIUSA's annual National Weekend of Faith in Action on the Death Penalty, which has engaged thousands of faith communities and interfaith groups throughout the country. Before joining the staff of AIUSA, Houlé was a board member and local chapter leader for the Kentucky Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty and later was involved with the Illinois Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty and other abolition groups in the Chicago area. She has also worked as a research analyst for Roberts & Kay, Inc., a consulting firm in Lexington, Kentucky, and as the policy director for the Coalition for Consumer Rights in Chicago, Illinois. She earned her BA summa cum laude from the University of Kentucky Honors Program and was the recipient of the Golden Key Honor Society Outstanding Senior Scholarship Award.
