Grantees
David Dent
2004

David Dent will write a series of articles on his elementary school classmate Anthony Jackson, who is serving a life sentence in a New York state prison. His articles will explore how Jackson’s journey to a life of crime mirrors cultural intersections of race, class, and the criminal justice system. The research is part of a book Mr. Dent is writing on the journeys of his third grade class from 1968 to the future. The articles on Anthony will explore the impact of under-funded psychological services in middle and low income minority communities on crime rates, the emergence of Seventies Blaxploitation culture and its impact on some black male peer cultures, and the economic and social implications of building prisons in rural communities. Mr. Dent’s exploration of Anthony Jackson’s life will illustrate the inter-related social, economic and racial problems that plague urban communities and the role and impact of the criminal justice system on individual lives and society.
