Western Prison Project
The Crime Survivors for Community Safety will organize progressive survivors of crime in Washington state and Nevada to educate the public, community leaders, and policy makers about the need for criminal justice reform. For far too long the prevailing perception has been that society is best served through a retributive justice system; the reality is that our current system serves to incarcerate greater numbers of poor people and people of color without addressing the roots of violence, nor bring healing to survivors of crime. The project will strengthen the criminal justice reform movement in these states by breaking down the popular but false, dichotomy between “victims” and “offenders,” and build a more united movement for reform that works to create safe and livable communities for everyone. This work builds on Bird’s previous experience as a violent-crime survivor who has effectively mobilized other survivors in Oregon to participate in broad-based education and advocacy efforts for criminal justice reform.
