Ricardo Barreras
2007

Bronx Defenders

A grant to conduct research that will examine the social, legal, and economic effects on people arrested and processed through the criminal justice system for a misdemeanor charge. Barreras will translate the research findings into advocacy tools to educate people involved in the justice system.

Barreras is an assistant professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Population Health at Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine. His research has focused on understanding the role of science in struggles over social policy, and studying how science is used as a resource for social and political change. Barreras has also examined ways to connect research to broader social movements and worked with community-based and nonprofit organizations to strengthen advocacy on the issue of mass incarceration and its impact on families and communities. Barreras received his PhD from the CUNY Graduate Center and his BS from the University of Florida.
