Grantees
Leslie Neale
2004

Ms. Neale will complete and conduct outreach and distribution around her film “Juvies,” a powerful documentary about juveniles being prosecuted and convicted as adults and sentenced to adult prisons in California. Over a four-year period, “Juvies” follows the evolving lives of kids from Juvenile Hall into a brutal adult prison system. In her film, Ms. Neale achieves unprecedented access to juvenile and adult facilities, and through the stories of the diverse group of young people she features, she convinces the viewer of the desperate need for systemic reform and a re-examination of our values as a society and culture. The film challenges the viewer to examine what in American culture has caused us to demonize youth and allow the collapse of the juvenile justice system; a system originally designed to protect them.
