Sentencing Project Announces Stipends for Felony Disenfranchisment Research

Date:
November 21, 2003

OSI grantee The Sentencing Project announces the availability of stipends to produce research designed to broaden the analysis and understanding of the dynamics of felony disenfranchisement.  The program will award $2,500 stipends to faculty, graduate students, journalists and other researchers.

Felony disenfranchisement laws in 48 states and the District of Columbia deny voting rights to varying categories of persons serving sentences in prison, on probation or parole, and in some states, individuals who have completed their sentences. An estimated four million Americans are unable to vote as a result of these laws, which are accompanied by dramatic racial disparities as well. The Sentencing Project aims to stimulate an innovative and thought-provoking examination of key aspects of the issue in order to inform policymakers and the public.
