Poll: Ethnic Groups in California at Odds With Criminal Justice Policies

Date:
February 15, 2004

According to a multilingual poll, Californians, regardless of ethnic and racial background, strongly support rehabilitation over incarceration for juveniles and adult nonviolent offenders and back public spending on education over prisons, the Los Angeles Times reported on February 21. The poll, funded by OSI and the JEHT Foundation and conducted by Bendixen & Associates in May 2003 for grantee New California Media (NCM), also revealed that racial and ethnic groups have strong, and at times near unanimous, opinions on crucial criminal justice issues that range from alternative sentencing to police misconduct. “The views of non-English speakers are not fully reflected in most other public polls,” Sandy Close, NCM’s director told the paper.
