Soros Justice Media Fellow Jennifer Gonnerman's book, Life on the Outside: The Prison Odyssey of Elaine Bartlett, has been selected as a finalist for the 2004 National Book Award. Life on the Outside chronicles the life of Elaine Bartlett, who spent 16 years in prison for a non-violent drug offense. The book documents Elaine's struggle to find a job, maintain family ties, and find decent housing. In doing so, the book calls attention to the plight of the 650,000-plus people who leave prison for home in the United States every year.
