What Does Justice Mean to You?
Date: August 2, 2010
The Soros Justice Fellowships support established and emerging leaders from around the country to undertake projects that address problems with the U.S. criminal justice system. No society can be “open”—where all of its members have a chance to participate fully in civic, political and cultural life—if:
- 1 in every 99 people are behind bars;
- adequate legal assistance is in desperately short supply;
- children can be sentenced to serve the remainder of their natural lives in prison;
- communities are left to suffer the ongoing effects of mass incarceration.
The need for critical examination, courageous leadership, creative thinking, and fierce determination has never been greater. These are some of the voices of the Soros Justice Fellows.
