Established in 2004 by Maya Wiley, the Center for Social Inclusion (CSI) advances legal advocacy, community organizing and research on how “race-neutral” policies and racially biased institutional arrangements pose significant barriers to social justice for poor people of color. As a civil rights intermediary, CSI partners with local and national groups to address systemic barriers of opportunities for low-income communities of color by advancing legal strategies that embrace community mobilization. As a project of the Tides Center, CSI takes an applied research approach developing useful tools for communities to talk effectively about race and advocate for themselves. CSI convenes stakeholders, nurtures multiracial alliances, and develops advocacy strategies based on the research and curricula.
