Equality and Opportunity
The Equality and Opportunity Fund includes grantmaking and other initiatives to ensure justice and equality, to prohibit arbitrary and discriminatory government action, and to lift barriers that prevent people from participating fully in economic, social, and political life. The fund provides ongoing support for immigrant rights; racial justice; women’s rights; and lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender rights.
By bringing these issues together under one umbrella, the fund has the flexibility to provide more support for partnerships that transcend communities, identities, and issues. While the fund recognizes that experiences differ substantially among individuals and across communities, it supports efforts that respect difference while focusing on the shared values that bind individuals and communities together. In seeking to challenge inequality and expand opportunity, the fund focuses on structural problems and places high priority on advocacy that cuts across multiple issue areas, identities and constituencies.
The fund also houses OSI's Neighborhood Stabilization Project, supporting effective and timely responses to the subprime lending crisis and its impact on low and moderate income communities and communities of color.
