Cristóbal Joshua Alex

Program Officer, Democracy and Power Fund
U.S. Programs

Before joining the Democracy and Power Fund in February 2009, Cristóbal Joshua Alex was the director for the National Campaign to Restore Civil Rights. Prior to that, Alex practiced civil rights law with MacDonald, Hoague & Bayless, with a focus on governmental misconduct that included cases dealing with prisoner rights and police accountability.

He was the student body president at the University of Washington School of Law, and led rallies and marches opposing anti-affirmative action initiatives. He helped organize successful legislative campaigns to give undocumented students access to higher education, and to fund an unprecedented $40 million in farmworker housing.

Alex has served as the youngest president in the history of the Latina/o Bar Association of Washington, and established the Farmworker Justice Project and the Latino Political Action Committee. He also developed the Pathways to Law mentorship program—the first of its kind in the country—pairing community college students of color with attorneys of color.

Alex is the chair of the Civil Rights Section of the Hispanic National Bar Association, a frequent public speaker and writer on issues relating to immigrant justice, voting rights, and human rights, and a regular blogger on Huffington Post.
