The poll asked U.S. adults with an immediate family member who has had a drug or alcohol addiction a variety of questions about addiction in general and the impact of addiction on their own lives.

Key points from the poll include:

  • 76% of adults who had an immediate family member addicted to drugs or alcohol believe addiction is a disease "caused by a combination of physical and psychological factors."
  • Among adults who had an immediate family member addicted to drugs or alcohol, 75% believed that people with an addiction can recover completely - but 50% of those believed professional help was required.
  • 81% of Americans are more likely to vote for a candidate who favors policies that promote treatment and recovery programs vs. incarceration.
