The poll is a first-ever comprehensive survey of the general public on stigma, discrimination and other barriers to recovery from addiction to alcohol and other drugs.

Key points from the survey include:

  • 34% of Americans still believe addiction is a moral failing, a figure that remained unchanged between 2001 and 2004.
  • Approximately half of all Americans view addiction as a disease/health problem.
