Closing the Addiction Treatment Gap is a $10 million national program of the Open Society Institute. This initiative is designed to create an awareness of—and increase resources to close—an alarming treatment gap: Currently, four out of five Americans who need drug and alcohol addiction treatment are unable to get it. The initiative aims to mobilize public support for expanded treatment by increasing public funding, broadening insurance coverage and achieving greater program efficiency.
Closing the Addiction Treatment Gap will support a wide range of projects and partnerships that meet the goals stated above. Eligible applicants are required to:
- Show proof of Internal Revenue Service Code 501(c)(3) tax-exempt, government, or quasi-public authority status
- Have a scope of responsibility that includes a cohesive governmental jurisdiction (e.g. city, county, state, tribal jurisdiction, etc.)
Eligible applicants are encouraged to:
- Have demonstrated experience in expanding the resources available from government, insurance, and other sources for the treatment of addiction to alcohol and other drugs
- Form partnerships with key stakeholders (e.g. treatment, recovery and other advocacy and medical organizations, provider associations, parent groups, political leaders, governmental agencies and tribal organizations) that can help expand the capacity of the treatment and recovery systems in that jurisdiction
- Engage a funding partner (e.g. foundation or corporate sponsor) to contribute to the cost of this project and to sustain the work
