Democracy and Reforms: Good/Bad Governance Watch
2007-2010

The project encompasses a comprehensive audit of democratic governance in Slovakia. The grantee will provide a systematic monitoring, research and analysis of five basic areas: democratic institutions and rule of law; national legislation; protection of human and minority rights; independent and public media; and policies of European and transatlantic integration. Accumulated findings, discussed broadly in public debate, can serve as a valuable restraining force against dangerous upsurge of populist elements of ethnic nationalism, illiberal tendencies and etatism in policy-making. This project will also eliminate the current gap in monitoring national legislation in Slovakia.

The Institute for Public Affairs (IVO) is an independent public policy think-tank. The main objectives of the Institute include:

  • analyzing socio-political and other issues of public interest and publishing the established findings;
  • contributing to an expert dialogue, opening and discussing important issues, actively participating in provoking and shaping the public debate on these issues;
  • organizing seminars, conferences, discussions, interdisciplinary roundtables, workshops and training courses;
  • stimulating citizens’ active involvement in public life;
  • pursuing a variety of publishing activities and projects;
  • contributing to enhancing the professional standard and education of young professionals.
