Institute for Democracy and Mediation
2007

Institute for Democracy and Mediation (IDM), founded in 1999, is an independent, nongovernmental organization working to strengthen civil society, consolidate democratic processes and to develop broad community-based partnerships through increasing stakeholders’ understanding and capacities to participate in democratic processes for an improved governance at all levels. IDM’s activities are part of a continuing struggle to strengthen shared values and confidence across the broad spectrum of political and non-political actors in Albania. Eventually they contribute to the strengthening of Albanian institutions, law enforcement and rule of law, as a precondition for EU and NATO integration.

IDM’s work is structured through three core programs: Local Governance and Community Participation Program; Security Sector Governance Program; Research and Policy Development program with a specialized unit on EU integration. The IDM team centers its efforts on a variety of policy issues in the fields of security sector governance, decentralization, civil society and institutional building. It introduces novel concepts based on extensive research work, promoting good practices and strengthening the capacities of local stakeholders. IDM strives for the prevalence of an inclusive approach to policy making processes through emphasizing the importance of public-private-civic partnerships as an efficient tool to ensure commitment and ownership of reforms.
