Journalism

Vital to a well-functioning democracy, independent media provides a critical reflection on society and government. Yet, too often media coverage focuses on the latest political events, scandals, and personalities, ignoring the depth and range of complex policy issues facing the state and the public. Issues such as public health, justice, the environment, fiscal transparency, and accountability require analytical coverage that frames the arguments, generates public debates, and challenges existing thinking.

The OSI Journalism Fund works internationally to support training opportunities for working journalists to understand key issues and learn how to cover them. By promoting programs and partnerships among media organizations, training institutions, universities, and advocacy and research organizations, the fund seeks to support local and regional organizations to implement training programs, create seminars for editors, provide support for reporting, and develop opportunities for networking and mentoring for journalists.
