Please note that the deadline for admission to the DAAD-OSI Program in 2008-9 has passed. Potential applicants from Azerbaijan, Georgia, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Belarus, Moldova and the Ukraine should check back again in late summer 2008 for a call for applications for the academic year 2009-10.
The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and OSI's Scholarship Programs sponsor a joint scholarship program for graduate students and junior faculty in the Trans-Caucasian and Central Asian countries of the former Soviet Union. The DAAD-OSI Program is designed to improve the framework for teaching and research in humanities and social sciences in the region. At the same time, it promotes network-building among the participants and German academics as a basis for further international exchange activities.
Eligibility
For the 2008-9 academic year, applications are invited from students and faculty in Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Tajikistan, and Ukraine.
The following are eligible to apply:
- postgraduate students holding the equivalent of a bachelor's degree and having completed a four-year program as a minimum;
- PhD students holding an MA degree;
- junior faculty members holding a doctoral degree.
Support Opportunities
- Two-year post-graduate MA programs (Aufbaustudiengänge)
- Three-year dissertation fellowships for PhD (Promotion) candidates (requirement: completed MA)
- Research fellowships (Studienaufenthälte) of six months over two consecutive years
Academic Programs
Political Science, Sociology and the Social Sciences, International Relations, Law, European Studies, European Integration, Economics, Economic Relations, Management Science, Education Management, Public Health, Philosophy, and Peace Studies/Conflict Resolution, International Development Studies, Global Political Economy.
Note: Selective programs are available for MA (Aufbaustudiengänge) degree students (see list below – link to MA Course List 2008-9 ). Faculty and PhD candidates may choose any university in Germany where eligible disciplines are taught.
Applicants currently residing outside of their home countries are not eligible to apply.
Law applicants must hold a “Diplom specialista” or master's degree by the time of the commencement of their studies in Germany.
Language Requirement
A good knowledge of German is desirable. Funding for additional language training may be available.
Selection Process
Interested individuals may submit applications on the usual DAAD forms at the office of a local DAAD Lecturer (Lektor) or at the local German Embassy. The selection committee will include two German university professors, one DAAD and one OSI representative, and one or two local university professors. In the case of applications for PhD scholarships, the final decision may be conferred to a selection committee in Bonn. The Test of German (DSH) will be administered by DAAD Lecturers.
Pre-selected applicants will be invited for a personal interview in early 2008.
Financial Support
Participants will receive the usual DAAD stipends, an allowance for travel to and from their host institutions and, if required, a language course (lasting up to 4 months). PhD students are entitled to a trip to their home country after the second year. Please note that within this program, accompanying spouses or children are not eligible for family allowances.
