From Intolerance to Understanding: Photography Exhibits and Public Programming Spotlights OSI Grantee
Lynn Johnson, a 2005 Documentary Photography Project Distribution Grant recipient, presents a series of Pittsburgh-area indoor and outdoor exhibits, multimedia installations, conversations, and workshops centered on her photography project "Hate Kills" to initiate community-wide conversation about prejudice and intolerance.
Johnson has practiced photojournalism for over 30 years, shooting for international magazines including National Geographic and Sports Illustrated, where she is a staff photographer. As a Knight Fellow in the School of Visual Communications at Ohio University, Johnson completed her forthcoming book Hate Kills. She has received seven Golden Quills for Photojournalism, four World Press Photography Awards, and the Robert F. Kennedy Journalism Award.

Events
- May 24: A community conversation on the role of the arts in creating tolerance, with Lynn Johnson. Judith Schachter of the Center for the Arts in Society at Carnegie Mellon University will moderate. Panelists include Jessica Gogan, Warhol Museum; Tracy York, Family Communications Inc.; and Billy Jackson, filmmaker.
- May 25: Hate Kills/Love Heals. American Shorts will host local personalities reading relevant selected stories.

The gallery will include an interactive multimedia exhibit and a photographic chronology of the life and work of Pittsburgh’s own Mr. Rogers. The exhibit will be accompanied by activities for youth and training for educators and families on issues of tolerance and diversity.

- May 23 and June 6: Art therapy sessions on handling anger.
- Every Wednesday: Make a peace doll.
- Date TBD: Workshop using material from the exhibit to address issues of tolerance building and awareness in children.
