In late 1994, Régina Monfort began photographing teenagers from the Puerto Rican and Dominican communities of Brooklyn's Williamsburg section. Monfort’s work grows out of the personal relationships she has developed with the young people she photographs, and the resulting images document the process of growing up in Latin Williamsburg as it unfolds—with its oddities and contradictions.
Beyond Grand Street was exhibited at the Open Society Institute in the fifth Moving Walls exhibit and at the Brooklyn Public Library. It is currently on view through October 16, 2007, at William T. Kemper Art Gallery, Kansas State University.
