OSI Grantee Speaks on Photographing the Former Soviet Union
Jonas Bendiksen, a 2006 Documentary Photography Project Distribution Grant recipient, will discuss his photographic journey through the unrecognized countries, enclaves, and isolated communities featured in his new Aperture book Satellites: Photographs from the Fringes of the Former Soviet Union. Many of these outposts are places where Soviet nostalgia looms large, self-styled brands of capitalism have emerged, cities are scarred from bloody insurrections, and entire populations have fled in search of better lives.
