Audience Engagement Grantees & Projects

Resources for Applicants

Since 2005, the Documentary Photography Project Audience Engagement Grant program has funded over 30 projects that range in topic, location, format, and purpose. Below is a list of projects, divided by category. Projects do not need to be limited to these categories, and we encourage future applicants to propose new and innovative distribution models.

Projects are listed under the primary mode of presentation or distribution. When projects focus on multiple strategies, they are listed several times, under the main categories that apply.

Exhibitions & Photography in the Public Sphere

To bring the work to audiences who may not normally be exposed to the issue. This may take the form of exhibitions or outdoor installations. Projects often include activities or events that stimulate dialogue, analysis, or collective action, and are connected to larger campaigns or initiatives.

Community-Informed, Locally Based Exhibitions

To give voice to and empower the underrepresented. Community participation can be included in the process of creating or presenting the images. Photographs are most often installed outdoors and exhibited within the communities that are documented. Projects may also include additional exhibitions outside the community. Projects are often connected to larger organizations or campaigns and have a long-term, ongoing benefit to those who are participating in the project .
