Ken and Melanie Light
2005

Ken and Melanie Light—in collaboration with the public libraries in West Virginia, the town of Northfork in West Virginia, and the University of California Press—brought his project "Coal Hollow" back to the region. Multimedia kits, aimed at encouraging civic participation, were donated to the service center libraries and circulated, in turn, among the 179 public libraries. The multimedia kit consists of a book, 25 laminated prints, 10 laminated text cards, DVD (with photos, oral histories, and music), DVD player, and a laminated resource list.

Light, a social documentary photographer, is an adjunct professor and director of the Center for Photography in the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California, Berkeley. Among his books are Witness in Our Time: Working Lives of Documentary Photographers, Texas Death Row, and Delta Time. He has received two National Endowment for the Arts Photographers Fellowships, the Dorothea Lange Fellowship, and a fellowship from the Erna and Victor Hasselblad Foundation.
