Moving Walls Beirut Exhibition

Location: Beirut, Lebanon
Event Date: February 8, 2007 - March 3, 2007

The work of seven photographers included in previous Moving Walls exhibitions in the United States were shown at Espace SD, alongside the work of Lebanese photographers Rania Matar and Randa Mirza. The photographs in this exhibition cover diverse regions—including Ethiopia, the former Soviet Union, the Middle East, and the United States—and subjects such as political transition, prison life, wounded veterans, American Islam, and homelessness. Moving Walls Beirut was organized by OSI's Documentary Photography Project and Middle East & North Africa Initiative, in partnership with Espace SD and the Arab Image Foundation.

Workshops

Coinciding with the exhibition, Al-liquindoi organized a production workshop taught by Moving Walls photographer Gary Fabiano from February 10 - 13. This four-day workshop was held at Espace SD for twelve local photographers.

Lebanon has a strong history of photography and the participants came to the workshop from varying backgrounds in the medium, from art to photojournalism. All shared in common a firm belief in the importance of documentary photography and in record keeping. Fabiano asked each participant to pick one story idea; for many, the time spent working on stories during the workshop was just the beginning of longer-term projects. By the final day—after intense photography and editing sessions—the participants had sufficiently developed their stories in order to show the work in a public projection held at the gallery. View a list of workshop participants and their photographs.

Student workshops were organized by OSI’s Network Debate Program.
