Moving Walls Amman Exhibition

Location: Amman, Jordan
Event Date: November 29, 2006 - December 29, 2006

The work of seven photographers exhibited in previous Moving Walls exhibitions in the United States were shown at Al-Hussein Park - Cultural Village, alongside the work of Jordanian photographer Tanya Habjouqa. The photographs in this exhibition cover diverse regions—including Ethiopia, the former Soviet Union, the Middle East, and the United States—and subjects such as political transition, prison life, wounded veterans, American Islam, and homelessness. Moving Walls Amman was organized by OSI's Documentary Photography Project and Middle East & North Africa Initiative, in partnership with the Greater Amman Municipality, Royal Film Commission, and Makan.

Workshops

Coinciding with the exhibition, Al-liquindoi organized a production workshop taught by Moving Walls photographer Eric Gottesman from December 2–5. This four-day workshop was held at Makan for nine local photographers. The participants were a reflection of the country's demographic make-up. From different social and economic backgrounds, the group came to the workshop with various photographic backgrounds (photojournalism, reportage, studio photography, and contemporary art) and expressed diverse interpretations of the photographic medium and its many uses. The work produced was the basis for establishing a dialogue about photography and encouraging criticism. The participants received encouragement from both Eric and each another to experiment with the medium and open themselves up to alternative ways of interpreting photography and its role in society. The workshop ended with an evening presentation projected onto a two-way screen on Makan’s balcony, allowing for the images to be viewed by both those on the inside and passersby on the street. View a list of workshop participants and their photographs.

Student workshops were organized by OSI’s Network Debate Program.
