Moving Walls International: Manama

Location: Manama, Bahrain
Event Date: May 2, 2006 - May 31, 2006

The work of seven photographers exhibited in previous Moving Walls exhibitions in the United States were shown at Al Riwaq Gallery alongside the work of two local photographers, Amal Khalaf and Loredana Mantello. The photographs in this exhibition cover diverse regions—including Ethiopia, the former Soviet Union, the Middle East, and the United States—and subjects such as political transition, prison life, wounded veterans, American Islam, homelessness, and domestic violence. Moving Walls Manama was organized by OSI's Documentary Photography Project and Middle East & North Africa Initiative, in partnership with Al Riwaq Gallery.

Workshops

Coinciding with the exhibition, Al-liquindoi organized a production workshop for local photographers taught by Moving Walls photographer Edward Grazda from May 4–8, 2006. This five-day production workshop was held at Al Riwaq Gallery for thirteen local photographers, both Bahraini and international residents of Bahrain. The workshop struck a balance between fieldwork and editing exercises, immersing the students in a learning experience that encouraged them to develop their own way of seeing. The final result from the workshop, presented as a public projection at Al Riwaq Gallery, is a dynamic interpretation of life in Bahrain. View a list of workshop participants and their photographs.

Student workshops were organized by OSI’s Network Debate Program.
