Moving Walls Damascus Exhibition

The work of seven photographers included in previous Moving Walls exhibitions in the United States were shown at Mustafa Ali Gallery and Art Foundation, alongside the work of local photographers Nadim Ado and Bassam Diab. The photographs in this exhibition cover diverse regions—including Ethiopia, the former Soviet Union, the Middle East, and the United States—and subjects such as political transition, prison life, wounded veterans, American Islam, and homelessness. Moving Walls Damascus was organized by OSI's Documentary Photography Project and Middle East & North Africa Initiative, in partnership with Mustafa Ali Gallery and Art Foundation.

Workshops

Concurrent with the exhibition, Al-liquindoi organized a production workshop taught by Moving Walls photographer James Nubile from March 23 - 27, 2007. The five day workshop was held at Mustafa Ali Gallery and Art Foundation for ten local photographers.

The workshop took place in the heart of the Old City and consisted of participants who were representative of the diverse demographic make up of Damascus. From different age groups and socio-economic backgrounds, the photographers had varying levels of experience with photography, yet they all shared the same enthusiastic passion for the medium. The group editing sessions and ensuing discussions were intense and benefited the photographers so much so that the group almost always extended the workshop sessions late into the evening. The participants selected a range of subjects and utilized different photographic styles for their workshop projects; some photographers used a conceptual approach, while others worked in traditional documentary or journalistic modes. Each photographer worked diligently over the course of the five days to produce a body of work that was edited into a group show and presented as a public projection at the gallery.
