Medical and nursing textbooks play an important role in the transformation of our attitudes toward death and dying. They disseminate and institutionalize information about palliative care that already exists in the corners of our health care system, and, as gaps in our knowledge become visible, they stimulate research that will provide new answers.
This issue of PDIA's newsletter calls attention to deficiencies in the way medical textbooks address care for the dying, which "provide little information that would help a physician to care for a dying patient."
