The Rift Valley Institute hosted and facilitated an OSIEA-sponsored meeting of Southern Sudanese civil society in Juba.

The meeting brought together representatives of local NGOs, media, churches, academics, traditional authorities, and the government of Southern Sudan to discuss issues of importance to Southern Sudanese civil society including the fundamental questions of what constitutes civil society in the context of Southern Sudan and the role and relationships among civil society, the Sudan People Liberation Movement (SPLM), the government of Southern Sudan, and traditional authorities. The content of the discussion fed into a subsequent meeting of Southern Sudanese civil society sponsored by the SPLM.
