Achieng Akena

AU Legal Analyst

Achieng Maureen Akena joined OSIEA as a legal associate, providing legal, technical, and logistical support to the Africa Union Advocacy program and the communications office, in addition to monitoring human rights and governance development in East Africa and the AU.

Prior to joining OSIEA, she worked with the United Nations Assistance Mission to Afghanistan (UNAMA) as a human rights officer. In 2006/7 she worked with International Refugee Rights Initiative (IRRI) in Uganda where she coordinated a project on international justice in Africa.

From 1999-2006 she worked with DITSHWANELO - The Botswana Centre for Human Rights as an officer for the activism and information programs, where she worked on issues related to marginalized and disempowered communities, including indigenous peoples' rights, rights of refugees and undocumented migrants, gay rights, and the death penalty. She studied law at Nagpur University in India and human rights law at the Central European University (CEU) in Hungary. She is a member of the Kenyan bar.
