As one of the largest and most influential Arab states, Egypt is a key focal point of OSI activities in the Middle East and North Africa. Although compared to other countries in the region Egypt enjoys relatively open nongovernmental activity and freedom of speech, an atmosphere of strict oversight persists. OSI activity in Egypt looks to support the country’s civil sector, and consists of core support to groups promoting civic and human rights. These include, but are not restricted to, organizations working in the areas of women’s rights, the rule of law, and independent culture and media. OSI is also exploring work in the promising area of economic reforms, looking at questions such as housing and access to financial services.
