MENA works closely with the Open Society Institute Assistance Foundation–Turkey, a liaison office that identifies actors and activities that will help Turkey's evolution toward an open society, facilitates collaboration between Turkish civil society and the Soros foundations network, and makes funding recommendations.

Arts and Culture
MENA promotes cultural and artistic development as an activity that reflects open society values and positively influences public attitudes.

Human Rights
MENA partners with a number of human rights organizations in the region by providing grants for general support or specific projects.

Information
MENA collaborates with OSI’s Information Program to promote the equitable deployment of knowledge and communication resources by providing access to content, tools, and networks for civic empowerment.

Media
MENA collaborates with OSI’s Media Program to promote independent, quality journalism and to help establish an environment favorable to the survival and development of free, responsible media.

Scholarships
MENA works closely with OSI's Scholarship Programs, which support students and scholars by providing fellowships, scholarships, and related activities that allow them to improve the social, political, and intellectual environments of their home communities.

Women
MENA supports the advancement of women’s human rights, gender equality, and empowerment in countries ranging from Morocco to Egypt to the Palestinian Territories.

Region Focus Areas

Egypt
OSI activity in Egypt looks to support the country’s civil sector and consists of core support to groups promoting civic rights.

Iran
With regard to Iran, OSI is dedicated to two complementary priorities: fostering intellectual exchange between Iran and the outside world, and promoting cooperative programming with Iran or Iranians abroad.

Iraq
OSI activity in Iraq focuses primarily on ensuring transparency of public accounts during the post-war period and encouraging a speedy transition to democracy.

Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories
The priority of OSI’s work in Israel and the occupied Palestinian Territories is empowering Palestinians to promote a more open and equitable society, whether in Israel proper or the West Bank and Gaza.
