Kenneth S. Thompson, MD
Pittsburgh, PA
2000

Fellowship Partnering Organization: Consumer Health Coalition
Home Institution: University of Pittsburgh

This project focused on the health inequities that exist in Allegheny County and the surrounding region, with the goal of eliminating them with assistance from the health-care industry and other resources. Dr. Thompson gathered relevant data, met with community leaders, and organized community conferences as well as networks of clinicians and community members.

Fellowship Successes

  • Dr. Thompson published a monograph, “The Health Status of the African American Community in Allegheny County,” with support from the University, the Medical Center, and the Urban League.
  • Several conferences on health equity and community initiatives were organized in the community and attended by over 600 people.
  • The Consumer Health Coalition incorporated addressing the social determinants of health into their mission statement.
  • The U.S./U.K. Dialogue on Health Equity in Post De-industrial Regions was established (see http://www.ucis.pitt.edu/gap/health_ineq).

Post-Fellowship Successes

Dr. Thompson helped a number of community leaders come together to develop an approach to health, place, and people that ties sustainability with economic regeneration, community development, and health promotion.
