Fellowship Partnering Organization: Physicians for Human Rights
Home Institution: Boston Medical Center (Dr. Kasper currently works in Tucson, AZ, with Southwest Emergency Associates)
With the assistance of community-based organizations, Dr. Kasper conducted a study of the health and well-being of children (with a particular focus on food insecurity and hunger) in poor, Latino, undocumented immigrant families in the greater Boston area in the context of federal and state hunger and welfare policy. The project also involved linking the criteria contained in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child with domestic and international policies affecting children.
Fellowship Successes
- Preliminary results from the study were cited in a piece by the editorial staff of the Boston Globe.
- An article, "The Relevance of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child for United States Domestic Policy: Welfare Reform and Children in Immigrant Families," was published in the FXB Health and Human Rights Journal.
Post-Fellowship Successes
- Dr. Kasper was elected president/CEO of Doctors for Global Health.
- An article, "Child Labour in India: A Health and Human Rights Perspective," was published in The Lancet.
