Fellowship Partnering Organization: Colorado Coalition for the Medically Underserved
Home Institution: University of Colorado Health Sciences Center

The project was designed to raise awareness of the crisis of the medically underserved through a media campaign that placed stories of individuals without adequate insurance or access to care into the local media. The goal was to highlight the failure of the current system, educate the public about the crisis, and increase the effectiveness of the Coalition in creating solutions.

Fellowship Successes

  • Numerous stories were published or broadcast;
  • Successful partnership with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s "Cover the Uninsured" Week in 2003 and 2004;
  • Numerous speaking engagements across the state;
  • Institution of an advocacy curriculum for primary care residents in internal medicine;
  • Submission of a HRSA training grant to develop a leadership and advocacy training program for the medical school (funding decision pending);
  • Successful networking and partnership with a number of advocacy organizations and community groups.
