Austrian Radio Interviews Rachel Neild on Ethnic Profiling

The Austrian Broadcasting Corporation in Vienna interviewed Rachel Neild, senior legal advisor with the Open Society Justice Initiative, about ethnic profiling in that country. Throughout Europe, the use of ethnic and religious stereotypes by law enforcement are harming efforts to combat crime and terrorism.

Ethnic profiling occurs most often in police decisions about who to stop, question, search, and, at times, arrest. Yet there is no evidence that ethnic profiling actually prevents terrorism or lowers crime rates. Police forces can achieve greater efficiency and improve their relations with minority communities by reducing ethnic profiling, and the Open Society Justice Initiative has worked to help reform police practices and provide a roadmap toward greater fairness, improved efficiency, and better police–community relations.
