Open Society Justice Initiative Launches Website Documenting First-Ever International Criminal Court Trial

Date:
January 26, 2009

Thomas Lubanga is the first person to be tried by the International Criminal Court in The Hague. A former rebel leader in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Lubanga is accused of using child soldiers to fuel that country’s brutal conflict. In an effort to amplify Congolese voices, the Open Society Justice Initiative launched a website today, LubangaTrial.org, which will cover the trial's proceedings and provide legal analysis and commentary on the case.

Journalists from the Congo will provide daily reports from the courtroom, and experts will provide commentary on the proceedings. Site users can interact by posting comments on the entries and asking questions about the trial.

LubangaTrial.org is a resource for everyone interested in the trial, particularly those based in the Great Lakes Region of the Congo who were most affected by the 2002-2003 conflict, and for journalists reporting on the case.

The website was produced in partnership with WITNESS and the Institute for War and Peace Reporting.
